East Stroudsburg University graduate Tina Haney has been selected as the 2018 Terri Lynne Lokoff/Children’s TYLENOL® National Child Care Teacher Award. ESU President Marcia G. Welsh, Ph.D., recently announced the recipients of the inaugural President’s Distinguished Medals to Robert “Bob” Moses, William “Bill” B. Cramer, Esq., and the R. Dale and Frances M. Hughes Foundation for their commitment and work that has exemplified the values of ESU. The recipients will be honored during the University’s 125th Anniversary Celebration Dinner on October 25, 2018. Legacy Families return to ESU

ESU grads created, grew wildly successful Philly Pretzel Factory

When Dan DiZio and Len Lehman were frat brother roommates at East Stroudsburg University, they talked about getting into the bar business together in their hometown of Philadelphia. By the time they graduated in the mid-1990s, their dream had faded and the pair got practical. DiZio, a business management major with an emphasis in finance, went to work as a stockbroker in Philadelphia. Lehman, who majored in sociology and criminal justice, took a job as a psychiatric counselor working with at-risk kids in Bucks County.

ESU Foundation names four new board members

Robert Willever ’75, East Stroudsburg University Foundation Board Chair, has announced the appointments of four new members to its Board of Directors. East Stroudsburg University alumni Douglas S. Leonzi ’94 of Allentown, Geoffrey M. Roche M’15 of Annville, David A. Super ’80 of Stroudsburg, and Christopher Yeager ’74 M’81 of Bangor were appointed during the board’s last quarterly meeting held on May 18, 2017.

ESU Named to Money Magazine List of Best Colleges

Eight colleges and universities in the Greater Lehigh Valley made Money magazine’s list of “best colleges for your money.” The magazine said the findings show “more than 700 colleges offer at least a basic level of educational quality. And dozens of affordable schools have excellent track records of helping students attain opportunity and financial stability.”

President Welsh’s First Five Years

Soon after Marcia Welsh arrived at East Stroudsburg University as president in 2012, she asked staff members when the university held its annual gathering with community and business leaders to assess the region’s challenges and strengths. “Everybody kind of gave me a blank stare,” recalls President Welsh. “So I said, ‘OK, we’re going to do this next year.’ In the fall of 2013, we had our first Economic Outlook Summit.”

President’s Distinguished Entrepreneur Speaker Series

East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania is proud to announce the launch of the President’s Distinguished Entrepreneur Speaker Series. The series will bring entrepreneurs to ESU’s campus to talk about the various challenges they’ve faced in their careers as well as life experiences and educational opportunities that have guided them on their journey. The Series begins on Tuesday, April 4 at 7 p.m. in Beers Lecture Hall with ESU alumnus and founder of Philly Pretzel Factory, Dan DiZio, class of 1995.

ESU Foundation surpasses goal on Giving Tuesday 2016

The East Stroudsburg University Foundation participated in its first Giving Tuesday on Tuesday, November 29, 2016.  Thanks to more than 200 alumni, students, faculty, staff, parents and friends, and generous challenge gifts from ESU Foundation Board members and President Dr. Marcia G. Welsh, Ph.D., the Foundation exceeded its $30,000 goal, raising $36,605 in one day.

Patrick Steidle: ESU Alumnus and Stanley Cup Champion

On Patrick Steidle’s first day with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, he knew nothing about ice hockey. In fact, he knew so little that during his first game with the American Hockey League (AHL), the minor league affiliate of the National Hockey League’s (NHL) Pittsburgh Penguins, he waited for the opposing team’s athletic trainer to take his spot because he didn’t know where to stand.

Jamil Joseph defines “summer fun” differently than most people. A May 2016 graduate of East Stroudsburg University’s Theatre Department, Joseph spent 12 weeks in Massachusetts in intensive study as part of the Commonwealth Shakespeare Company’s Apprentice program.

Ahmad Chaudhry ’96, D.M.D., M.D., will be the keynote speaker for East Stroudsburg University’s graduate commencement ceremony. After graduating from ESU summa cum laude with a B.S. in biology, Chaudhry pursued dental studies and graduated from Harvard School of Dental Medicine with honors.

ESU Alumna Heads to the Peace Corps

Sullivan’s interest in the Peace Corps stemmed from a woman who inspires her every day. When she was about 15-years-old, Sullivan would listen to her dad tell stories about her aunt who spent in the Peace Corps and her career working as a Foreign Service Officer and living in a different country every three years.

ESU Graduate Student Wins Annual Business Plan Competition

Blaise Delfino, a graduate student at East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania who developed “Fader Plugs,” designed to protect the wearer from harmful noise, won the $10,000 first place prize in the fifth annual Student Business Plan Competition sponsored by Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education.

Gardner ’74 Honored with Lifetime Achievement Award

Mary Pakenas Gardner had a plan. In the spring of 1974, the two most important weekends of her life were just a few days away. She was to graduate from East Stroudsburg University (ESU) first and then a week later she would walk down the aisle on her wedding day. ESU Alumna Christine L. Donohue Elected to PA Supreme Court

Christine Donohue (D), a 1974 political science graduate of East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania, was elected to the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania on Tuesday, November 3. She is the first graduate of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education elected to serve on the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania, the oldest continually sitting appellate court in North America.

Material Culture, a nationally renowned auction house with over three decades of experience in the fields of art, antiques and collectibles from around the world, will provide auction services for this initiative.

The third annual One Book, One Campus program

The third annual One Book, One Campus program is focusing on a book that takes its readers on a thought-provoking journey through a fictitious world of cultural and racial alienation. “Your Face in Mine” by Jess Row tells the story of Martin Wilkinson, who pays a hefty sum to undergo something called racial reassignment surgery, to transform from a white Jewish man to an African American. 

ESU Theatre, Alumna Prepares for the Juilliard School

Chills ran down her spine just from hearing the name: The Juilliard School. Kelsey Pulzone ’14 accepted a stage management internship at the renowned Juilliard last month. The Juilliard School of dance, drama and music was founded in 1905. With a mission to “provide the highest caliber of artistic education for gifted musicians, dancers, and actors from around the world,” Juilliard is the alma matter of famous actors including Robin Williams, Christopher Reeve and Christine Baranski.

Carberry ’70 named president-elect of SCALA

Judith Carberry ’70, firm administrator of Barnwell Whaley Patterson & Helms, LLC, has been named the president-elect of the South Carolina Association of Legal Administrators (SCALA), an official chapter of the Association of Legal Administrators (ALA).  The SCALA and ALA are leaders for the business of law, focused on the delivery of cutting-edge management and leadership products and services to the global legal community.

Tom LoBasso ’90 named president of Daytona State College

The Daytona State College District Board of Trustees announces the appointment of Dr. Thomas LoBasso as the seventh president of Daytona State College in Daytona Beach, Fla., effective June 2. He had served as interim president since January 2015. Prior to being named interim president, LoBasso held the position of chief operating officer and provost at the college. He brings to the institution’s top post a deeply rounded background in higher education leadership. 

ESU Foundation appoints two new Board of Directors

The East Stroudsburg University Foundation welcomes two new members to its Board of Directors.

Richard D. Santoro named Executive Director of the East Stroudsburg University Foundation

Richard D. Santoro has been named Executive Director of the East Stroudsburg University (ESU) Foundation, effective June 1, 2015. The appointment was announced today by ESU Foundation Board Chair and Alumnus Robert Willever ’75. As Executive Director, Mr. Santoro will report directly to the ESU Foundation Board of Directors and will be responsible for providing strategic leadership and management for the joint fundraising efforts of the ESU Foundation and the Office of University Advancement including board relations, financial operations, investment management and administrative direction.  

ESU Graduate Student Set to Study Frogs in Costa Rica

Beimfohr, a graduate student studying biology from Oxford, Pa., will be spending her summer studying frogs. She recently received a $1,000 Pennsylvania System of Higher Education (PASSHE) grant to help fund her research. Beimfohr applied for the grant, which is specific to graduate students, through ESU’s Foundation website.

Four ESU Alumni Commissioned as Officers in the United States Army

Four recent graduates of East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania were commissioned as officers in the United States Army at the ROTC Commissioning Ceremony, which was held on Saturday, May 16 at Kings College.

Sarah Khan Becomes First ESU Fulbright Scholar, Headed to Turkey

Fourteen. That’s how many times East Stroudsburg University graduate student Sarah Khan rewrote the essays that accompanied her winning application for a prestigious Fulbright fellowship. Khan’s perseverance paid off, making her the first ESU student to be chosen for the highly competitive Fulbright U.S. Student program, which will enable her to spend nine months teaching at a university in Turkey.​

ESU alumni and friends reconnect in Florida

ESU representatives hit the road this winter, visiting and connecting with alumni in the Sunshine State. ESU President Marcia G. Welsh, Ph.D., and Mary Frances Postupack, vice president for Research and Economic Development, brought that Warrior spirit south February 21-27, 2015, meeting alumni and friends of ESU at Florida events in The Villages, St. Pete Beach, Englewood and Don Pedro Island.

Athletic Training Department Celebrates 40th Anniversary

When East Stroudsburg University senior Steven Malvasi was 14 years old, he knew what he wanted to do with the rest of his life. A rough afternoon at track practice led a teenager with a scraped up knee to his first visit with an athletic trainer. Among the hours spent with his athletic trainer, along with a fascination for the human body and love for sports, Malvasi was hooked on the profession.

ESU Alumna Makes History with Bobsled Team

Caitlin Stuetz M’14, helped make history earlier this month when she joined seven other women to compete on bobsled teams internationally. The four women sleds, one American and one Canadian, broke the gender barrier by racing in the North American Cup in Parks City, Utah on February 7 and 8 as the only two all-women teams racing against male teams.

ESU Alumnus Runs in his Eighth Empire State Building Run-Up

On February 4, Ochse brushed off his sneakers to complete his eighth Empire State Building Run-Up, where runners accept the challenge of climbing 1,576 steps to the top of the Empire State Building. He won the inaugural event in 1980, clocking a time of 12 minutes, 19 seconds. He won again in 1982, when he leaped to the finish line at 11:42.  

ESU Alumnus Named Deputy Director of SBA Eastern Pennsylvania District Office

Michael T. Kane M’07 is the newest deputy director for the U.S. Small Business Administration’s Eastern Pennsylvania District Office. In this position, he will help manage delivery of SBA programs and services to small businesses throughout the eastern 40 counties of Pennsylvania.  

ESU Students Make the Most of Summer with Prestigious Internships

ESU graduate students Rebecca Hayter of Belvidere, N.J., and Courtney Hulsart of South Amboy, N.J., are interning this summer with Sunoco, thanks to ESU alumnus Rob Marro ’81, who is the general manager of Sunoco’s Race Fuels Department as well as a temporary instructor in the business management department at ESU.

Kristyn Fedich, who went by Kristyn Pede (her maiden name) when she received her bachelor’s degree in 2006 and then her master’s in 2011 from East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania, capped off last summer by writing a book.

Bogota Public Schools name alumnus as teacher of the year recipient

The Bogota School District of Bogota, N.J., announced their winners for the teacher of the year award for the 2012-2013 school year, naming alumnus Marc Sinclair ’08 as one of the three recipients.
